Java Platform Updates

Georges presented an overview of some important projects being worked on in OpenJDK, including work being done to ensure Java is the platform to choice for running AI workloads in the cloud. He also shared some details on the informational JEP that was published on Tip & Tail Development for Library Maintainers (JEP 14). There were some great presentations and discussions at Devoxx Belgium. We are trying to ensure new features are adopted as they are released or shortly after new versions of Java are released. The Java ecosystem of tools and libraries is a strength of the Java Platform, and we want to ensure developers can use them by minimize blocking dependencies. With Tip & Tail Development you can provide stability with less change for some projects and additional newer features for other projects and maintain compatibility (see the presentation for details).

Java Ecosystem Working Group

Heather reviewed the Java Ecosystem Working Group wiki page and the next meeting date. Don Raab presented on his experiences as a library maintainer of the project he started, Eclipse Collections (see presentation for details). Don suggested that we should highlight the advantages and incentives for library maintainers as there is overhead to take advantage of new features more quickly. Mala Gupta presented a case study discussing how JetBrains supports new versions of Java (see presentation for details). She will follow up with some suggestions for library maintainers based on their experiences.

JCP 25 Year Anniversary

Heather shared updates on some of the activities around 25th anniversary of the JCP (see the presentation for details) including some articles and videos highlighting many of the Java User Group Celebrations around the world. Following the break, we joined a SouJava celebration event in progress. Each of the JCP EC members was able to share some thoughts with the user group members are they were celebrating the 25 Year Anniversary of the JCP program in Brazil. See article for details, pictures and the video link).

JCP Award Nominations

Heather reminded EC Members that nominations for the 2024 JCP Awards are currently open. The EC will vote on the JCP Awards in February and the awards will be presented at the annual JCP event. The annual JCP event will be held in March 2025 during the JavaOne Conference in Redwood Shores, California. (see the presentation for details).
