A new white paper entitled "Java
Standards: The Mandate for Interoperability and Compatibility"
is available on the JCP.org site in pdf format. In this META Group
Research Whitepaper, the role of the Java Community Process (JCP)
Program is explored and it illustrates how the JCPit delivers platform independence
and interoperability to the users of Java technology.

The JCP is participating at several industry events in the coming months.
JCP EC Member, Orange, will be taking their second ?Code
Camp? event for members
of its developer programme to Sarasota, Florida
(US) 18-20 April (registration
info).
During the event ? comprising 72 hours of learning, coding, demonstrating
and building ? Orange will be actively seeking input from developers about
the shape of MID-P 3.0 and feeding it back to the JCP program. Registration
is encouraged now as places are limited ($249 including accommodation
and food for 72 hours).
TeleManagement World (TMW), Nice (France), 17-19 May.
This conference, organized every year by the Telemanagement Forum (TMF),
is the largest conference worldwide dedicated to OSS: http://www.tmforum.org.
The quarterly JCP program Executive Committee (EC) meeting and JCP Training
session will be collocated with TMW, leading to multiple interactions between
both events.
The JavaOne Conference, San Francisco (US), 27-30 June. This conference,
now in its tenth year, is one of the largest gatherings in the world of
developers, IT managers, and business professionals who are focused on
Java technology: http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf/. The JCP program will
have activities planned during the conference-stay tuned for details.

The European edition of the JCP Training & Communication session will be
held in a one and a half day format on 19 (half day afternoon session) & 20
May (full day), following TeleManagement World in Nice, France:
Training times: 19 May 13:00 - 17:00 and 20 May 9:00 - 17:00
This will be a hands-on, interactive session that includes
modeling a JSR Expert Group and tips on how to utilize the JCP 2.6 enhancements
introduced last March to increase the transparency, efficiency and participation
of JSRs. The JCP Training and Communication Sessions present an unique
opportunity for future Spec Leads and Expert Group Members to meet with
members of the PMO and experienced Spec Leads & Experts.
The sessions are hosted by the PMO free of charge and are
open to everyone with interest in the JCP Program. If you wish to attend,
know someone who would like to attend, or would like some more information

There are several new JSRs being developed through the JCP program. You can nominate to
serve on the expert group of these JSRs by clicking on the "Join Expert Group" link on the
JSR detail page urls listed below. You can also request to join the Observer Alias of JCP 2.6
JSRs by emailing the spec lead (listed on the JSR detail page).
- JSR-271, Mobile
Information Device Profile 3, is now available for review.
This JSR will specify the 3rd generation Mobile Information Device Profile
(MID-P), expanding upon the functionality in all areas as well as improving
interoperability across devices. The review closes 21 March.
- JSR 208 Java Business
Integration (JBI), is now available for Public Review; this
review closes 4 April.
- JSR 106, XML Digital
Encryption APIs, is now available for Community Review, this
review closes 4 April.
- JSR 113, Java Speech
API 2.0, is available for Public Review. This specification
defines a cross-platform interface to support speech recognizers and synthesizers.
- JSR 228, Information
Module Profile - Next Generation, has passed Public Review
ballot. Final release is planned for April 2005.
- JSR 226, Scalable
2D Vector Graphics API for J2ME, has completed its work and
published the Final Release of the specification.
