Women in Technology Breakfast hosts Najae Stevenson and Heather VanCura at DevNexus 2024
|
Each year, when the DevNexus Conference is held in Atlanta, there is a "Women in Technology" breakfast session on the first day
of the conference. This event is anticipated each year, as it is known to break barriers and increase inclusivity in the industry.
This year, the breakfast session was led by Atlanta JUG Board Member Najae Stevenson and Heather VanCura, Chair of the JCP Program
and had over 100 participants.
"These events provide opportunities for networking amongst peers to create a culture of inclusivity and belonging. The Women in Tech
breakfast at DevNexus is one of my favorite ancillary activities at conferences, and I believe it is a vital component of top
industry conferences and events," says VanCura.

"In today's professional world, conferences and networking events are crucial for career growth and community building," says
Barbara Treacy, community member and faculty who attended the breakfast. Treacy says that the key elements that made the event
successful and that other community leaders could follow to organize similar events include:
- Thoughtful Planning: The session was well-organized, with energetic co-chairs setting an enthusiastic tone and clearly explaining
the structure. The organizers' attention to detail was evident, as they circulated among tables to ensure smooth discussions and prevent
any single voice from dominating.
- Round Table Discussions: Participants could choose from various topics, each led by a facilitator, ensuring diverse conversations and
allowing everyone to find a subject that resonated with them. One area for improvement could be clearer signage for table topics,
allowing participants to make more informed choices about where to sit.
- Inclusive Atmosphere: While focused on women in tech, the event welcomed male allies, fostering a more comprehensive dialogue.
- Time Management: The discussions were perfectly timed, allowing for meaningful conversations without dragging on.
- Casual Setting: Hosting the event over breakfast created a relaxed environment, encouraging open and honest sharing.
Paula Santana, leader of the Lisbon JUG and Java Girls JUG, described the breakfast as an "amazing moment" where they could share many
experiences. As a first-time attendee, she appreciated the opportunity to discuss leadership and community-building. She noted that while
it was a space for women, she appreciated that men were present to listen and understand women's experiences.
What made this event particularly valuable was the focus on the experiences of women in the tech industry. Participants could share their
stories, gain validation, and offer support to one another. For newcomers, it provided an excellent opportunity to form connections that
could last throughout the conference.
Events like these are vital in fields where the majority of participants are male. They not only empower women but also educate male allies
about the challenges their female colleagues face. By fostering open dialogue and creating a safe space for sharing, these gatherings play a
crucial role in driving change and promoting inclusivity in the tech industry.
