Even though I'm voting Yes, I'm concerned that
this JSR proposes to add another API without
integrating with the other APIs listed in proposal
(plus, 1.4 java.util.LinkedHashMap, which can be used to build ad-hoc caches). I hope that the spec
leads ensure participation from people responsible for these other APIs in order to achieve a properly integrated result.

We are extremely interested in seeing this proposal come to fruition. This will provide a critical element in completing the Java framework.

Since this specification is "particularly useful on server platforms," we feel a better integration with J2EE standards is necessary. Specifically, the "Local Only EJB" model provide by EJB 2.0 and J2EE 1.3 eliminates many of the concerns stated in section 2.4. We think that policy driven caching and support for data not derived directly from back-end systems is a straightforward extension of the EJB programming model, and can be accomplished by applying new policies to Homes and Containers.

We are also interested in the role of JMS to allow a source of data to send an invalidate signal to a cache of data. This model has been very successful in IBM's Olympic and other sites.
