Sun is supportive of the development of a standard, general-purpose data validation mechanism, but has some concerns that this JSR may overlap with JSRs 227, 295 and 273. Sun's vote is based on the following understanding from Jason of the following separation of concerns:-

- JSR 303 would define general purpose validation metadata that could be adopted by the model interfaces defined in JSR 227 or its successor.
- JSR 295 will define appropriate binding validation hooks into which data validation code can be plugged, potentially following JSR 303 constructs, if the 295 expert group so chooses and its schedule permits.
- JSR 303 will need to coordinate any design-time specific extensions to the JavaBean model pertaining to data validation with the JSR 273 expert group, and as the 273 schedule permits.
