We see need for the profile for PDAs. However the expert group should clarify the relation with MIDP and base the work on MIDP as much as possible and trying to achieve compatibility between MIPD and JSR75. Also the JSR should not restrict this to devices with pointing features. We do not wish to see 1 JSR per device category.

On 2000-08-07 Sun Microsystems, Inc. voted Yes with the following comment:
Sun concludes that the Java community might need to develop a new J2ME profile for devices in the space that includes PDAs.  We take such devices to provide at least more capable displays, and consider that they might target different applications, than devices supported by the Mobile Information Device Profile (MID profile, JSR-037).

However, we think that the current JSR could be clearer in its motivation, and in defining its relationship to other profiles, especially the MID profile.  We would hope to see its scope quickly clarified by the Expert Group.  We would also hope to see better representation from the device community, and in particular by the cell phone community, than is initially listed on the JSR.
