We are concerned about the TCK maintenance costs, listed in the business terms, building up to unreasonable levels as a licensee includes multiple languages in their implementation. As currently stated, supporting 10 languages (a reasonable number for a European market handset) would imply a US $200K yearly fee. While we recognize that the TCK includes per-language features so per-language fees are justified, we think the incremental cost of supporting an additional language should be less than the cost of supporting the first language since a lot of development and maintenance effort is shared between different languages.

We think that the API is well designed and has very comprehensive functions. However, it is therefore highly complex and requires fairly advanced speech recognition and synthesis features. It also assumes a high level of speech recognition understanding from the application developer. It might not be feasible in many Java ME devices in the near term, but can provide good features in those high end platforms where applicable.
