The Expert Group needs to take particular care in ensuring no overlap with exisiting initiatives in defining their scope. For example the JSR refers to "logging" which is already being driven by JSR 47.

In followup to the comment from Cisco, it sounds like some of this support could be provided for by a discovery protocol such as SLP (Service Location Protocol) which is described in some IETF RFCs.  Caldera has made an open source implementation and has reference to the IETF RFCs at http://www.openslp.org/

Though, this may be beyond the scope of this JSR.

I would like to see the following capabilities as well:

1. A ping command to see if the process is up
2. A heartbeat service thru which one can register  a heartbeat listener
3. Some set of reasonable performance counters (may be like memory usage, uptime, et al) so that we can profile the service
