Sun votes yes because we are generally supportive of the work and
progress of this JSR. Sun did raise a number of technical concerns ahead
of community draft. In the interests of early review and with the agreement of the spec lead we're

revision.

We vote for proceeding with this JSR, but think  that the following issues should be solved before the Public Review version of the specification:
- currently the APIs do not allow applications to be written in a protocol agnostic way, i.e. without the application developer needing to know the details of the protocol. The original JSR text states that the API will be protocol agnostic. We think it is a very important requirement that this is achieved in a way that allows applications to be written so that the same application can work with multiple protocols and that the application programmer does not need to be aware of the details of each possible protocol.
- it should be considered that the API would be based on the Generic Connection Framework as this is a common framework in J2ME and allows to reuse features like security and the Push feature of MIDP 2.0.
- the API should fit in a scenario where there are other IM / Presence clients in the same device
  and allow sufficient coordination between these client applications and appropriate routing of
  messages to the correct applications. In general, the API should be at a higher abstraction level rather the directly map to a specific protocol used between a client device and a server.
We think that many of the issues above could be solved if the API was designed closer to that 
level of abstraction as the JSR-120 / JSR-205 Wireless Messaging API is. Possible 
alignment with these JSRs should be considered.
